For high school students, graduation is a huge deal. It marks the transition from child to adult and signifies our beginning in the real world. We’ve waited all our lives to finally call ourselves seniors. For the class of 2018, graduation time is quickly approaching. In the matter of weeks we’ll no longer be high school students. We’ll be students of the world.
I couldn’t wait until I became a senior. Since my freshman year I’ve been looking forward to being in the senior courtyard, getting privileges, senior night, graduation, the list goes on and on. However, now that it’s here, I don’t want it to end.
Being a senior wasn’t what I expected it to be. Having to fill out college applications and scholarships takes up most of your time, and you’re still getting school assignments on top of that. Trying to balance school, college searches, a social life, and sports, was definitely harder than I anticipated it to be. The worse part is, once you feel as though you’ve finally gotten into the groove of thing, the dreaded “senioritis” comes into play (and let me tell you, it’ll hit everyone). You lose all motivation to do anything. Senior Jaeden Cruz says, “It’s been a struggle trying to stay ahead of everything, but it feels great when you do.”
It’s not because you’re too lazy to do work, it’s honestly because you really just don’t want to do it. If you think that time flies by during the school year, once you’re a senior that time goes by two times faster.
There are some minor bumps to being a senior but there are fun parts as well. Senior Ciara Ratum says, “This is the final stretch of my high school career, and it’s been a blast so far.”
You get a sense of accomplishment, knowing that all your hard work throughout the years has paid off because you’ve finally made it to the end of the road. Everything you do in high school from this point on is either going to be your last or first. All of these things are just counting us down until we reach graduation day.
It’s been a long road so far, and there’s an even longer one ahead of the class of 2018. But, with the help and guidance of those around us, we have what it takes to somewhat understand the real world. From that, we’ll learn along the way what it takes to become great.
